About This Opportunity

The Dalhousie Student Health Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia is seeking a locum position (3 days a week or more) to cover a CME for a family physician. This locum opportunity starts January 14th to April 15th, 2024. 

Time Commitment: 3.5 days/week (option to work 5 full days a week)

Patient Population: At this clinic you have the option to see a mix of community and student patients. The vast majority are young families, unusually healthy population, some retirees with very few comorbidities.

Colleagues: There are more than 10 family physicians working in this clinic. Two of these family doctors do OB only, and are readily available for questions related to OB or gynecology. There is one in-house psychiatrist (available for referral of students; easily available for questions also) and an entire wing of social workers and counsellors / therapists available for discussion/consultation in real time.

Staff: There are three individual nursing station/pods staffed by a team of nurses who can do liquid nitrogen, STI counselling, wound care, and more) as well as front desk/admin staff team, billing dept, and an amazing clinic manager. 

Community: This clinic has monthly formal physician meetings, monthly optional informal physician luncheons (socializing, interesting case review, etc.), PBSGL available, and frequent social gatherings for holidays. 

Facility: Dalhousie Student Health Centre is located at 1246 Lemarchant Street in Halifax. The clinic is in a new building, with two procedure suites equipped with OR lights.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Examine patients and take their histories, order diagnostic tests and laboratory procedures; advise patients on health care, health promotion, and disease prevention

Consultation and referral to other medical practitioners’

Act as a patient’s advocate

Prescribe and administer medications and treatments, inoculations and vaccinations

Report births, deaths, contagious and other diseases as per Nova Scotia Public Health requirements

Expected Hours

Time Commitment: 3.5 days/week (option to work 5 full days a week)

Qualifications

Eligible for Licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS)

Eligible for certification with the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC)

Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA)
